By this time next week, 2008 could retake the lead, at least in terms of raw dollars. 2008 is just a little below and 2007 a little above $7.25 billion. Year-to-date, 2008 closed the gap with 2007. More importantly, it was 35% higher than the same weekend last year. That said, it was still the first weekend in October and the overall box office was up 13% from last weekend to $113 million. Of the eight films that opened or expanded on Friday, only two were able to do some serious business, while most were lucky if they topped the Mendoza line by earning more than $2,000 per theater. The list was long enough that it has to be split up, and the second part can be found here. There are a number that are of interest, like Zodiac on Blu-ray, The Bourne Trilogy on Blu-ray, and others, none rise to the level of DVD Pick of the Week. One of the longest lists in a while this week, but there's a lack of quality at the top. While Lakeview Terrace only managed third place on the sales chart this week, it led all new releases and took first place on the rental chart, generating about 33% more revenue than last week's winner, Max Payne More.

This includes a surprise number one film, Open Season 2, which took first place with 554,000 units sold, and it was the only release to crack $10 million with opening week sales of $11.07 million.ĭVD Rentals - Lake Viewed on the Home Market New releases dominated the DVD sales chart this week, taking the top three spots, four of the top five, and seven of the top ten.

Over the weekend it sold 1.68 million units and $27.10 million, plus an additional 89,000 units and $2.76 million from the two-pack.
The new number one was Madagascar 2 - Escape to Africa, which was released later in the week than the rest of the releases. There were a huge number of new releases this week, and they occupied the top four spots on this week's sales chart. Wizard of Oz - 70th Anniversary Edition on either DVD or Blu-ray Gift-set is DVD Pick of the Week material. Aliens is certainly in that list, but until the DVD and Blu-ray shows up, I can't confirm if it's a DVD Pick of the Week of merely a must buy. This week there are not that many releases on this week's list, but there a few releases at the very top that are worthy of being the DVD Pick of the Week.
